My Story and Philosophy
Elizabeth Schmidt:
Artist, Designer, Nature and Adventure Lover
Using organic and beautiful shapes, ornamentation and textures, my body of art is made for intimate spaces. It is meant to make you feel balanced and peaceful, or even meditatively zone into dimensional space and the "perfect imperfections".
As a Los Angeles Artist, I am fortunate enough have access to beautiful beaches for recharging and the element of water for inspiration. Time in nature and trips up the coast or into the desert are also an important part of my creative process.
My background is in fashion with an 18 year career in that industry, and I found my way into the nexus of fashion and art and thriving in art departments, surrounded in creativity, all the while seeking out what was “cool”. In fashion, I have found a niche in design with graphics for apparel and textiles.
But, after working with digital art for fashion for so long, I am finding that what I think is “cool” is thoughtfully hand made and hand drawn uniqueness. So, I have been creating illustrations, mandalas and mantras without a screen that are made with ink, colored pencil and are sparingly digital. They are also are carefully matted in up-cycled, vintage frames.
My degrees are a BA in theatre from the University of New Hampshire and a professional designation in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in DTLA. At UNH, I studied costume design and illustration. At FIDM, I learned to design using among other thing, color theory, technical and figurative fashion illustrations. The techniques I acquired at fashion school like drawing with pen, markers, colored pencil, as well as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop are tools I use to this day. Over time, I have added to my arsenal of artistic technologies, including Bauhaus and Feng shui principles, typography, figurative drawing, meditation mandalas, Zentangle and Procreate.
Hopefully you will find inspiration in my work, and a perfect, lovely space for them in your home. Also on this site are giclee and digital prints of many of my pieces.
